How to find the ‘Goldilocks’ fit trailer for your next job.

Is your trailer the right fit?

Size matters when it comes to road safety! Choosing the wrong trailer for your load doesn't just risk a fine—it risks your safety and your gear. This week, we’re breaking down how to find the "Goldilocks" fit for your next haul.

Welcome back to the True Blue Wholesale and Hire Tip of the Week! Whether you’re a weekend warrior tackling a DIY project or a contractor moving gear between sites, choosing the right trailer is about more than just "making it fit."

This week, we’re looking at how to pick the perfect trailer size for your load to ensure you stay safe—and legal—on the road.

1. Know Your Numbers (GVM & ATM)

Before you hook up, you need to know two main figures:

ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass): The total weight of the trailer plus the maximum load it can safely carry.

Towing Capacity: Check your vehicle’s manual. Just because a trailer can carry 2 tonnes doesn’t mean your ute is rated to pull it!

2. The "Goldilocks" Rule for Sizing

Too Small: Overloading a small 6x4 trailer puts immense pressure on the axle, tires, and suspension. If the tray is overflowing, your center of gravity shifts, making the trailer prone to swaying or "snaking."

Too Large: Pulling a massive tandem-axle trailer for a tiny load might seem safe, but an empty, heavy trailer can bounce aggressively on uneven roads, affecting your braking distance.

Just Right: Aim for a trailer where your load can be distributed evenly over the axles, with roughly 60% of the weight placed toward the front half of the trailer.

3. Securing the Load

Size doesn't matter if the load isn't still when you arrive. Always use rated tie-down straps rather than old rope. If you are hiring a machine like a mini-excavator or skid steer, ensure you are using a plant trailer with built-in ramps and specific tie-down points.

True Blue Pro-Tip: If you’re unsure which trailer matches your vehicle or your equipment, just ask our team! We’ll help you calculate the weights so you can drive away with confidence.

Stay safe on the roads and happy hauling!
